Doing some redecorating on a budget? We've put together a list of tricks from expert designers to help you. Put them to use in your home to create an affordable, chic and updated atmosphere.

1) Hang mirrors in dark hallways to reflect light and open up the space, says Bunny Williams, author of Scrapbook for Living.

2) Purchase throw pillows instead of spending money on new sofas and chairs. Interior designer Vanessa DeLeon says they add new colors and patterns to refresh a room.

3) Drape a patterned scarf over your headboard to change the color palette and look of your bedroom easily and affordably, advises interior designer and blog author Kristen Grove.

4) Use a bright color to paint the shelves of a neutral bookcase.

5) And here's a bright idea. Change the look of any room by installing a new light fixture. There are many stylish, affordable lighting options.

Keep these four tips from professional designers in mind when you’re setting up your living room, bedroom or family room:

  • Decorator Angelo Surmelis says to place couches and chairs a few inches away from any wall. This creates breathing room and makes your space seem larger.
  • HGTV’s designer Erinn Valencich suggests spreading light sources throughout a room to make sure some light shines in every corner.
  • When it comes to window dressings, architectural interior designer Nicole Sassaman says that it’s best to hang drapes from ceilings to floor. This makes the ceiling seem higher.
  • Art and other hanging wall decorations should be placed at least 24 to 36 inches above the top of the furniture line to create a clean and streamlined effect.

Area_RugDressing up your dining room, kitchen, or bedroom with an area rug? Angelo Surmelis, a professional celebrity designer in Los Angeles and owner of angelo: HOME.com, suggests buying a large rug. “You want to expose some flooring, but for the most part, go big, almost as big as the area.” Why? Placing a rug that’s too small often makes a tiny room appear even tinier, and in a larger room an undersized rug makes the space look disconnected.

And when selecting rugs for your bathroom and bedroom, Surmelis recommends going with soft textures.

Pets, garbage cans, various foods; they can all leave lingering odors. If you’d like to make your Preferred Living home smell nicer, try these suggestions.

  • First, open the windows. Fresh air is bound to help.
  • Use lemons to clean your kitchen sink. They leave a clean, citrus scent.
  • Place a piece of cedar or sandalwood in drawers or closets. It leaves a fresh, woodsy smell.
  • Keep houseplants indoors. They filter the air you breathe – and smell.
  • Pour a small amount of your favorite essential oil onto a few fabric swatches or light cloths and hide them around your suite.
  • Grow fragrant herbs in a window box and let the breeze blow their scent into your home.
  • Place a dryer sheet or two in your linen closet to keep towels and sheets smelling fresh between washes.
  • And, of course, keep all pets clean and well-groomed.
