It’s New Year’s resolution season – a time for new beginnings in a new decade. There’s no better time to make a positive change for yourself.
It’s a great idea, but how do you keep yourself accountable? How do you achieve the goals you set for yourself?
It’s all about staying SMART.
Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timely
Sometimes we burden ourselves with goals that are not necessarily our own, so be honest with yourself about why you want to achieve your resolutions.
Give your goals a roadmap and keep them SMART:
Specific: Goals should be clear and well-defined. Vague resolutions tend to fall to the wayside.
Measurable: Give yourself criteria to meet and ways to measure them. Tracking your progress helps you see how far you’ve come.
Achievable: Challenge yourself, but don't make your mission impossible. You'll get frustrated if your goals are unattainable.
Realistic: Your goals should be within your reach. Make sure goals match your purposes in life, and you have the resources to complete them.
Timely: Determine a start and end date to help give you a sense of urgency. Use your timeline as a motivator to complete your goals.
Break It Down And Back It Up
The success rate for New Year’s resolutions is shockingly low – about 2%. Resolutions typically fail because we set unrealistic expectations and don’t build support systems to help us succeed.
Use these tips so your motivation will stay strong throughout the year:
- Break resolutions down into smaller goals, so you feel a constant sense of accomplishment.
- Limit yourself to three resolutions at the most. Trying to change several things up will make it difficult to track progress and success.
- Take the time to plan out your steps to success. If you have a plan in place, you will be more likely to complete your goals instead of trying to achieve them on the fly.
- Write down your goals and share them with others, so you’re accountable. Having a support system in place will ensure you stick to your plan.
It’s okay to have a momentary setback but don't let a temporary hurdle derail your entire goal. Reflect on your progress and learn from your mistakes to refocus yourself throughout the year.
And don’t forget to reward yourself! As you put in work to meet your resolutions, acknowledge your efforts and treat yourself with a fun activity or a new experience. You'll be thankful you did.
