Chemical-Free Hacks

Cleaning supplies have been hard to come by for the last several months. So, if you’re looking for alternative ways to clean your home, we’ve got the cleaning hacks for you.

Sanitize Your Bathroom

Tubs and showers: Boil vinegar and wipe down shower/tub for five minutes. Sprinkle baking soda on a sponge to scrub away soap scum. Dryer sheets are useful for buffing away water stains on hardware.

Drains: Drop a few Alka Seltzer tablets down a clogged drain followed with a cup of distilled vinegar. Wait 10 minutes before pouring boiling water down the drain.

Toilets: Spray vinegar in and around the toilet to eliminate bacteria and odor.

Grout and tiles: Mix ¼ cup ammonia with a gallon of water to clean tiles and kill mildew. You can also soak cotton balls in bleach, place on tile/grout, and leave for 24 hours. Wash tiles with soapy water afterward.

Cut Kitchen Grime

Microwaves: Place a bowl of soapy water, or an equal vinegar-water mixture, in the microwave and run for one minute. Let the steam loosen stains and wipe clean. Garbage disposals: Clean your disposal weekly by scrubbing the baffle and grinder with a soapy sponge. Pour equal parts vinegar and baking soda down the disposal and cover the drain. Wait a few minutes before pouring hot water while running the disposal.

Stainless steel appliances: Use a microfiber towel to clear away dirt and fingerprints between deep cleanings. Stainless steel cleaning wipes are available for convenient maintenance. Method Cleaning Products also offers eco-friendly stainless steel solutions.

Kitchen odors: Place an open box of baking soda in the fridge or sprinkle some in the bottom of your trash can to eliminate food odors.

Spruce Up Your Living Spaces

Ceiling fans and vents: Enclose ceiling fan blades in a pillowcase to wipe away dust without making a mess. Spray your air vents with cleaner, then cover a dull knife with a rag to scrub between the slats.

Carpet stains: Combine two parts water with one-part vinegar and spray the stain. Cover it with a damp cloth and steam with an iron for 30 seconds. Heavier stains may require a baking soda paste left overnight before vacuuming away.

Sanitize furniture: Spray couches, pillows, and mattresses with rubbing alcohol to kill germs. Add a few drops of scented oil to deodorize.

Wood: Mix ¼ cup vinegar and 1 cup olive oil to condition wood furniture.
